Yevtushenkov says Amazon shows interest in Russia’s Ozon

MOSCOW, Jun 29 (PRIME) -- U.S. major online retailer Amazon has demonstrated interest in capital of its Russian peer Ozon, and the companies’ heads met, Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the core owner of multi-industry holding Sistema, which has 43% in Ozon, told reporters on June 27.

“Ozon is very appealing for foreign investors. I can say it’s the only company in Russia that Amazon considered from the point of view of participation together with (Japanese holding company) SoftBank. It proves that it’s a very important asset on the radar. We’re happy we’ve raised our stake (in Ozon),” Yevtushenkov said.

“(Ozon’s General Director Alexander) Shulgin had a meeting with (Amazon’s owner Jeff) Bezos five or six months ago, maybe more.”

Yevtushenkov said Ozon is a couple of steps away from profitability and is perfectly ready for an initial public offering. “The question is when to do it to the highest benefit,” he said.

Sistema’s core owner did not comment on media reports that Sberbank, Russia’s top lender, intends to buy some 30% in Ozon after an additional share issue.

“If (Sberbank) wants and does its best, it will be able (to buy Ozon’s stock),” Yevtushenkov said.
